Choosing fertilizer by habit can leave important questions unanswered. What does the soil need, which crop will be grown, and what has already been applied?

Start with the field history

Record the previous crop, manure and fertilizer applications, drainage problems and areas with uneven growth. Share this information with the laboratory or agricultural adviser interpreting your results.

Ask how to collect the sample

Contact the testing service before sampling. Follow its instructions on sampling depth, collection points, packaging and labelling. A sample should represent the area being assessed; visibly different sections may need separate samples.

Turn results into a purchase plan

Ask an adviser to explain the findings and recommend inputs for your crop and field. Request quantities for your actual acreage rather than copying a neighbouring farm. Do not assume that every field needs lime or the same fertilizer blend.

KALRO lists soil laboratory analysis among its online services. Confirm the available tests, charges and submission arrangements directly before sending samples.
